The Strengthen Terrestrial Protected Area Management and
Ecosystem Resilience Roadmap

Across the Eastern Caribbean, forests safeguard our water, our wildlife, and our wellbeing.
Yet, many of these vital lands are under threat. With your support, we can strengthen protected areas, restore thousands of hectares, and ensure nature continues to sustain our communities.

Context and Importance
Healthy terrestrial ecosystems form the foundation of life in the OECS — they regulate water cycles, store carbon, protect against disasters, and provide livelihoods for thousands.

However, habitat loss, land degradation, and climate change are eroding this natural safety net. Forests once rich in biodiversity are becoming fragmented, leaving communities more vulnerable.

The Terrestrial Protected Area and Ecosystem Resilience Roadmap charts a regional path to restore degraded lands, protect biodiversity hotspots, and ensure the benefits of nature are sustained for generations.
Initiative Detail
Enhancing Protected Area Management
Strengthening the effectiveness of existing Protected Areas (PAs) through better planning, staffing, and monitoring.
Prioritizing Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs)
Ensuring that conservation efforts target regions with the highest ecological value.
Restoring
Degraded Forests
Rehabilitating landscapes and replanting native vegetation to bring back lost ecosystem services.
Empowering Local Communities
Creating sustainable jobs in reforestation, eco-tourism, and forest product enterprises.
Potential Impact
7,000
hectares restored in existing PAs to recover degraded forest ecosystems
74,000
hectares protected to prevent future degradation
$6–7mn
million generated annually as additional GDP
400–500
jobs established across related sectors
Together, we can strengthen the Caribbean’s green heart — its forests, watersheds, and wildlife.
